100 Mile Challenges

100 Mile Challenges

Between January and March 2022, I will be attempting to ride three 100 Mile routes from Casa Magica. This is very much a personal challenge, but you are welcome to stay at Casa Magica (see prices below) and join me. The rides will be on the following dates:

Sunday 30 January: Loop Around Montserrat

Sunday 27 February: To Montjuic (Barcelona) and Back

Sunday 27 March: Down to the Costa Dorada

The Routes

Sunday 30 January: Loop Around Montserrat

(Distance: 160km approx. / Elevation: 2592m)

Montserrat is an incredible structure. It just rears up out of the landscape and dominates the views for miles around. We will have it in our eyeline for most of the day. The route up one side of the mountain to the monastery is a popular one for pilgrims, tourists and cyclists and will be the centrepoint of the ride I’m planning. The climb will also be the most testing of the day, just over 8km at an average of 7%. It is, predictably, a well-known challenge for local cyclists.

Route to be finalized.

Sunday 27 February: To Montjuic (Barcelona) and Back

(Distance: 166km approx. / Elevation: 2400m)

This ride is bookended with some pretty scenery in the heart of the Penedes around Sant Sadurni to Anoia and Vilafranca. The meat of the ride though will be through the Garraf mountain range to the west of Barcelona. These hills make for attractive, pine forest cycling, but do involve steep descents and ascents into and from Barcelona itself. Once inside Barcelona, there is also the short climb to the Castle of Montjuic to contend with, but once at the top there are some wonderful views across the city and the Mediterranean.

Route to be finalized.

Sunday 27 March: Down to the Costa Dorada

(Distance: 153km approx / Elevation: 2500m)

The ride starts in a westerly direction meaning that the sun should be at our backs lighting up the countryside all around. After a tough climb at around the 40km mark, it’s largely downhill until the coast which we will follow for a short while until we reach the pretty seaside town of Vilanova i el Geltru. After a stop at the beach for lunch (around 100km), and a dip in the surf if anyone is feeling hardy, we loop back up to Casa Magica, skirting the Garraf mountain range to the east and passing through some pretty villages. Needless to say, as the second half of the ride runs from the coast (0m) to Casa Magica (around 400m elevation), most of the remaining 60km is largely an upward slope, though with the occasional downhill to enjoy!
Route to be finalized (and a few miles added!).

The Rides

The rides are likely to take around 8 hours riding time. Average speeds of around 14mph (around 16mph on the flat). 3 stops are envisaged, 2 for coffee/snack/water refill, 1 for lunch around halfway. All refreshments will need to be paid for.

At present, this will be an unsupported ride i.e. no back up vehicle, but if there is enough interest i.e. more than a handful of riders, I may look to get a support vehicle (water, breakdown, spares, fatigue, injury etc), for which I would be asking for riders to share the cost (max £30 anticipated).

Prices

Prices

Prices per night per person during this challenge period (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday) will be £35 per night for a single room, £25 per night per person for a shared double room. Self service breakfast included. There will be no charge for the ride itself (unless we have enough people to warrant a support vehicle). It is likely you will have to use the shared bathroom with other riders.

Additional

Equipment

Road bike hire should be available but please enquire well beforehand.

All riders will need a helmet (hire available).

Health and Safety

Although there will be a safety briefing before the ride, this is a private ride and each participant rides at their own risk.

Extra

It is likely that the day before the ride we will do a short warm up ride plus, if there is sufficient interest, some sort of cultural activity e.g. wine tasting session. Riders will be welcome to extend their stay either side of the ride day itself.
