Cycle England 2018: Coast to Coast Challenge

Ride from one side of England to another while improving your English. This 3 day cycle challenge takes riders from the beautiful Yorkshire coast 280km to Liverpool, home of the Beatles. All the time you are riding you will have the chance to practise your spoken English with our native English Guide riders whilst also receiving tips and vocabulary from our expert teacher to help you improve your English.

We start at the chalk cliffs of Filey, in East Yorkshire. We then spend our first day crossing the undulating and highly scenic Yorkshire Wolds before finishing in one of England’s best known and historic cities, York where we spend the night.

The following day we continue west towards the majestic Yorkshire Dales. This will see riders come up against the steepest parts of the route but when you get to the top of the climbs you are well rewarded with some beautiful views.

After spending the night in the industrial town of Preston, our final day sees us ride into Liverpool, one of England’s most iconic cities, home of both the Beatles and Liverpool Football Club.

We believe that ‘practise makes perfect’ and what better way to practise than to speak English with real native speakers whilst you are cycling?

In addition, each day our lead rider and qualified English teacher Philip Haskins, will be providing additional vocabulary and grammatical tips to help you improve your English.

We will also be asking each rider to perform certain tasks on the route in English every day.

The ride costs €850.

Do I have to be fluent in English to come along?

No. We recognise that we will have a broad range of language abilities. The minimum we require is a basic conversational English. This will be equivalent to a Lower Intermediate / Intermediate level of English.

How much English will I learn?

Your cycling trip will only be a few days so don’t expect to become fluent in English after the ride. However, we do expect that after your trip you will have improved confidence in speaking English, better understand when listening to English and also have extended your knowledge of vocabulary in English.

Do I have to be a very good cyclist?

We will be cycling up to 110km each day across a variety of terrain (at an average speed of between 20 and 26kmh) so we would expect that people coming on the trip will be regular cyclists or relatively fit.

Do I have to bring my own bike and what sort of bike do I need?

All riders are expected to have a road bike. You are welcome to bring your own bike or we can arrange for a suitable bike for you to hire (additional fee applies).

Where will you pick me up from?

We can arrange to pick you up from either Liverpool, Manchester or Leeds airport on Thursday afternoon (1200-1700) of your trip. We will return you to the same airport on the Monday morning following the ride. This transfer is included in the price of the trip.

You will need to find suitable flights.

Do I need insurance?

You will need to arrange your own personal liability insurance before the trip.
